# What Is an Agentic-Ready Website? A Plain Guide for Business Owners

> An agentic-ready website is one that AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode can find, read and use. The facts sit in plain text, AI search crawlers are let in, and the forms work for software as well as for people.

That matters because more of your customers now ask an assistant before they ask Google. "Find me a landscaper in Winter Haven who does pavers" is a sentence, not a keyword. The assistant reads websites to answer it. If yours is hard to read, it recommends someone else.

This guide explains what agentic-ready means in practice, how to check your own site in about ten minutes, and what to fix first.

### AI assistants now read your website for your customers

Three things changed at once.

- **ChatGPT has its own search crawler.** OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." If your site blocks it, ChatGPT search has less to show about you.

- **Google shows AI answers with links.** Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode list supporting links. Google says a page qualifies when it is "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet."

- **Browsers are learning to act.** Chrome's Lighthouse testing tool now has an experimental Agentic Browsing category. It "evaluates how well your site is constructed for machine interaction."

Put simply, software is starting to do the shopping. Your website has two audiences now, and both need to get the answer fast.

### Agentic-ready comes down to three jobs

Every item on an agentic-ready checklist serves one of three jobs: be found, be understood and be usable.

#### Be found: let the right crawlers in

Your site's robots.txt file tells bots what they may read. Many sites block AI bots without the owner knowing, sometimes through a security plugin or a hosting setting.

You don't have to choose between being found and protecting your content. OpenAI treats search and training separately: "a webmaster can allow OAI-SearchBot in order to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot." Allow the search crawlers from Google, Bing, OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Apple. Then decide on training bots as a separate business choice.

If your site runs through Cloudflare, check its AI crawler settings too. Since September 15, 2026, new domains keep AI search bots allowed by default. Training and agent bots are blocked on pages that display ads. Every site owner can change those settings.

#### Be understood: put the facts where software can read them

Assistants read text, not pictures of text. Look at your own site with that in mind.

- Your phone number, service area, hours and prices should be written on the page, not baked into an image or a slider.

- Each service should have its own page that says what it is, who it is for and what it costs.

- Your business details in structured data (LocalBusiness schema) should match what the page shows.

Here is the honest part. Google says you "don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in its AI features, and "There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add." Agentic-ready is not a trick or a secret file. It is ordinary good website work, done completely.

#### Be usable: build forms and buttons software can operate

This is the newest job, and most small business sites fail it. Google's web.dev team published guidance for sites used by AI agents, and it reads like an accessibility checklist:

- Use real buttons and links: "Use `<button>` and `<a>` tags over modified `<div>` and `<span>` elements."

- Connect every form label to its field so an agent knows what "Name" belongs to.

- "Avoid transparent overlays that hide interactive elements," such as popups sitting on top of your form.

- Keep the layout steady. "Agents that take screenshots will likely be confused if your website layout is constantly shifting."

A site built this way also works better for people using screen readers, and it is easier for everyone on a phone. You are not building for robots at the expense of customers.

### Check your own site in about ten minutes

You don't need a developer for a first look.

1. **Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt.** Look for lines that name GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or "Disallow: /". If you see a blanket block, ask your web person why.

2. **Run Lighthouse.** In Chrome, open DevTools, choose Lighthouse and run a report. The Agentic Browsing category is experimental, needs Chrome 150 or later, and shows how many readiness checks your page passes.

3. **View the page source.** Press Ctrl+U and search for your phone number. If it is missing from the source, software may not see it either.

4. **Tab through your contact form.** Use only the Tab key. If you can't reach and fill every field, an agent will struggle too.

5. **Ask ChatGPT about yourself.** Ask it what your business does, where you work and how to book. Wrong or missing answers point to the pages that need work.

### Why many WordPress sites struggle with this

This section is our experience from rebuilding client sites, not a rule about every WordPress site.

Page builders tend to wrap simple content in layers of extra code. Sliders, popups and chat widgets load late and push the page around. Contact forms from plugins often use custom elements instead of plain buttons. None of this breaks the site for a person with a fast phone, but it makes the site harder for software to read and use.

Here is one measured example. We rebuilt a Central Florida landscaping company's WordPress site in Astro and measured it before and after on September 28, 2026, using Lighthouse 13 with the median of three runs.

- On a main service page, the share of agentic readiness checks passed went from 69% to 100% (desktop).

- On the home page, the main content appeared in 0.9 seconds instead of 2.3 seconds (desktop).

- Home page performance on mobile barely moved, from 70 to 72. Mobile speed depends on images and code that we keep trimming on every build.

We publish the numbers that didn't move too, because that is the only way the good ones mean anything.

### What agentic-ready does not mean

- **It is not a ranking guarantee.** Nobody can promise a spot in Google or in ChatGPT's answers. A readable, usable site removes the technical reasons you could be skipped. Reviews, content and your Google Business Profile still do the heavy lifting.

- **It does not require an llms.txt file.** Lighthouse checks for one, but Google says AI text files are not needed for its AI features. Add one only if it is cheap and accurate.

- **It does not mean building for tomorrow's tech today.** WebMCP is a proposed standard that lets a site hand agents explicit tools. It is early, so for most local businesses the right move is to get the basics solid and watch it.
